Reducing Errors That Lead to Uncertainties in Thermal Conductivity Measurement

Thermal conductivity (k-value or λ-factor) is the fundamental driver of subsea thermal insulation system dimensions. It follows that an accurate determination of this parameter is a prerequisite for proper thermal design. Poor k-value data inevitably lead to inadequate system designs, which in turn can limit economic viability. This paper provides an overview of the error sources inherent to a representative heat flow meter (HFM) method for measuring k, and their contribution to the accuracy and precision obtainable for the final experimental value.
